UNK Alumna Honored with CBT Distinguished Alumna Award

KEARNEY – Alexi (Tice) Wellman has been selected as the 2023 UNK College of Business and Technology Distinguished Alumna Award recipient.

She will be honored at the 43rd Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards luncheon on September 29 at 11:30 a.m. in the Ponderosa Room in the Nebraskan Student Union. Tickets are $25 per person ($30 starting Sept. 18), $15 for children ages 12 & under, and can be purchased until Sept. 21 at unkalumni.org/homecoming or by calling the UNK Alumni Association at 308-698-5271.

“Alexi is a wonderful role model for our students; she’s smart, articulate, and driven to succeed,” said Tim Jares, dean of the UNK College of Business and Technology. “Her career spans public and private accounting and C-suite leadership and she also is very involved as a volunteer and angel investor. Support from people like Alexi is making a huge difference in the development of new tech companies in Nebraska.”

Alexi (Tice) Wellman (1992)

Alexi Wellman resides in Papillion, Nebraska, and is the chief executive officer of Altaba, Inc. (formerly Yahoo, Inc.). Altaba is an independent, closed-end management investment company. Wellman was previously Altaba’s chief financial and accounting officer from 2017-2022 before her appointment to CEO.

She has held executive roles with Yahoo and Nebraska Book Company and was a partner at KPMG LLP. Wellman has held numerous board positions and is currently a director and chair of the audit committee of Werner Enterprises, Inc., and ESS, Inc.

Additionally, she is a speaker, venture capital partner, angel investor and supporter of the Nebraska startup ecosystem.

Wellman volunteers her time working with underserved youth and with Abide Omaha to revitalize inner city areas of Omaha. She is also an assistant coach for the Bryan High School girl’s basketball team.

Wellman earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration with an accounting minor from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1992 and is a licensed CPA. She is a Papillion, Nebraska, native and Papillion La Vista High School graduate.

UNK Alumnus Honored with Gary Thomas Music Award

KEARNEY – Justin Zeleski, Ed.D., has been selected as the 2023 UNK Gary Thomas Distinguished Music Alumnus Award recipient.

He will be honored at the 43rd Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards luncheon on September 29 at 11:30 a.m. in the Ponderosa Room in the Nebraskan Student Union. “Dr. Zeleski is passionate about promoting lifelong musical participation, especially in rural and low socioeconomic schools,” said Ting-Lan Chen, D.M.A., Gerald Feese Professor of Violin, UNK. “His efforts to break down music education barriers are commendable.” 

Gary Thomas Distinguished Music Alumnus

Justin Zeleski, Ed.D. (2005)

Justin Zeleski, Ed.D., resides in Omaha, Nebraska, and is the orchestra director and strings teacher at Millard West High School, Rowher Elementary and Black Elk Elementary.

He started his career in education as a K-12 instrumental and general music teacher in 2005 at Franklin Public Schools (Nebraska) before serving as the Clark County Public Schools (Nevada) 6-8 orchestra teacher from 2006-2018. In addition to his instructional duties with Millard Public Schools, Zeleski serves on the curriculum drafting team.

He is an active member of the American String Teachers Association, serving as the secretary of the Nebraska chapter.

Zeleski has been the recipient of several honors for his work in and out of the classroom, including being a Fulbright Program scholarship recipient in 2018, named to the Marquiese Who’s Who in Education in 2022, and was a three-time finalist for the Smith Center’s Heart of Education Award. He is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honorary.

While in college, Zeleski was a member of the Pride of the Plains Marching Band, wind ensemble and Kappa Kappa Psi. He performed with the Kearney Area Symphony Orchestra and many area bands and small ensembles. Zeleski is a Grand Island native and Grand Island Northwest High School graduate. He earned a bachelor’s in music education K-12 in 2005 from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He also holds a Master of Arts Education from American Intercontinental University and a Doctorate of Education from Kansas State University.

UNK Alumna Honored with Distinguished Educator Award

KEARNEY – Maureen (Gaffney) Nickels has been selected as the 2023 UNK College of Education Distinguished Educator of the Year.

She will be honored at the 43rd Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards luncheon on September 29 at 11:30 a.m. in the Ponderosa Room in the Nebraskan Student Union. She will also be recognized at the One Room, One Teacher Induction Ceremony that afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the College of Education Atrium.

“Maureen Nickels’ dedication to ensuring a quality education for children across the state of Nebraska is abundantly clear,” said Mark Reid, Ph.D., dean of the UNK College of Education. “She is a very deserving recipient of this award.”

College of Education Distinguished Educator of the Year

Maureen (Gaffney) Nickels (1974, MAE 1978)

Maureen Nickels of Grand Island, Nebraska, now retired, dedicated her 43-year career to the education of children in Nebraska.

Nickels spent her first 26 years after college as an elementary teacher for Grand Island Public Schools. Her classroom efforts were recognized with multiple awards, including honors from the Cooper Foundation, Peter Kiewit Foundation, United Nations “Kids Saving the Earth” award, President’s Environmental Youth Award (Region 7) and the Wings over the Platte Award. She was also a finalist for the Christa McAuliffe Courage and Excellence in Education Award in 1987.

In 2000, Nickels left the classroom and joined the Nebraska State Education Association as an organizational specialist and retired-staff liaison. During her time at NSEA, she developed and facilitated the Intergenerational Mentoring Program which placed retired teachers as mentors for college students training to become classroom teachers. She retired in 2017.

Nickels served two terms on the Nebraska State Board of Education, serving as president in 2020 and 2021, and was a member of the National Association of State Boards of Education from 2015-2022. In 2022, she was honored as the NASBE Distinguished Service Award recipient.

Currently, Nickels serves on the Heartland Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Board of Directors, is an officer for the Platte Valley Retired Education Association, is an advocate for the Grand Island Literacy Council and is a community volunteer for the Nebraska AARP. She also served on the UNK Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Nickels is an Anselmo native and an Anselmo-Merna Public Schools graduate. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education with a special education minor from Kearney State College in 1974. She also received her Master of Arts in Education from Kearney State College in 1978.

UNK Alumna Honored with Distinguished Chemistry Alumna Award

KEARNEY – Ruth (Udey) Harding, Ph.D., has been selected as the 2023 Dr. Donald E. Fox Distinguished Chemistry Alumna. Harding will share her lecture on Friday, Sept. 29, at 2:30 p.m. in Copeland Hall, Room 131. The lecture is open to the public.

She will be honored earlier in the day at the 43rd Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards luncheon at 11:30 a.m. in the Ponderosa Room in the Nebraskan Student Union. Tickets are $25 per person ($30 starting Sept. 18), $15 for children ages 12 & under, and can be purchased until Sept. 21 at unkalumni.org/homecoming or by calling the UNK Alumni Association at 308-698-5271.

“Dr. Ruth (Udey) Harding was an excellent student in both the classroom and research lab,” said Scott Darveau, Ph.D., professor of chemistry at UNK. “Ruth was one of our first undergraduate research students (along with Chris Exstrom, Ph.D.) focusing on photovoltaic thin films. Her success in conducting various spectroscopic techniques and their analysis was important in establishing the value of undergraduates in high-level scientific research and set the stage for two decades of collaborative research in photovoltaics between UNK and UNL.”

Dr. Donald E. Fox Distinguished Chemistry Alumna Award

Ruth (Udey) Harding, Ph.D. (2006)

Ruth Harding, Ph.D., of Livermore, California, is an operations manager in the Global Security Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, California.

Harding received her Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2006. Following her graduation from UNK, she earned a Master of Science in forensic chemistry and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, both from Michigan State University.

Founded in 1952, LLNL provides solutions to important national security challenges through innovative science, engineering and technology. Harding has spent 13 years with the LLNL, with roles as a graduate student intern, postdoctoral researcher, assurance officer, quality manager and now operations manager.

Her current role as an operations manager combines her passions for scientific research and safety management, enabling her to contribute to the research at a Department of Energy national laboratory by helping to plan work safely, perform safety oversight and enable the researchers to complete their mission deliverables.

She has been the recipient of the Lawrence Scholar Graduate Student Fellowship, R&D 100 Award and two Director’s Institutional Operational Excellence Awards.

Harding is a Columbus, Nebraska, native and Columbus High School graduate. While in college, she was a member of the UNK Alumni Association’s Gold Torch Society.

UNK Alumni Honored During Homecoming Festivities September 29-30

KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney Alumni Association will honor alumni award recipients during the University of Nebraska at Kearney homecoming festivities that will take place Sept. 29-30.

The 2023 UNK Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Awards go to Brian Buhlke, D.O., (1993), Tim Carman (1984) and Tim Schlattmann (1985). The Jim Rundstrom Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipient is Ryan Tworek (1998), and the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award will go to Dusty L. Birge (2011).

The 43rd Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards will be given out during a luncheon on Friday, Sept. 29, at 11:30 a.m. in the Ponderosa Room in the Nebraskan Student Union. Tickets are $25 per person ($30 starting Sept. 18), $15 for children ages 12 & under, and can be purchased until Sept. 21 at unkalumni.org/homecoming or by calling the UNK Alumni Association at 308-698-5271.

The Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, in the Ponderosa Room with a social hour. A dinner follows at 6:15 p.m. with five individuals being inducted into the UNK Athletic Hall of Fame. To purchase a ticket for the Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet, visit unkalumni.org/homecoming by Sept. 21. Tickets are $35 per person ($40 starting Sept. 18), $15 for children ages 12 & under.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, the day kicks off with the annual homecoming parade in downtown Kearney at 10 a.m. Following the parade, alumni and community members are invited to attend the free Loper Alumni Brews & Brats tailgate, sponsored by First National Bank Omaha, in Loperville at Cope Stadium starting at noon. The Loperville area is open until the 2 p.m. UNK football game kickoff against Washburn University.

Distinguished Alumni Awards

Brian K. Buhlke, D.O., F.A.A.F.P. (1993)

Brian Buhlke, D.O., F.A.A.F.P., is the chief of staff and trauma director for the Merrick Medical Center in Central City, Nebraska.

Following his graduation from UNK, Buhlke went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999 from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa, and completed his family practice residency through the University of Iowa at Mercy Family Medicine in Mason City, Iowa, in 2002. Upon completion, he accepted a position in Central City, Nebraska, with Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital, along with Lone Tree Medical Clinic in Central City and Park Street Medical Clinic/Genoa Community Hospital in Genoa.

Since 2007, Buhlke has been the trauma director and is also currently serving as the chief of staff for the Merrick Medical Center in Central City. He has served as an American Academy of Family Physicians Fellow since 2008.

Buhlke has been recognized as the National Rural Provider of the Year (Nebraska), UNMC Adjunct Professor of the Year, Nebraska Rural Physician of the Year, Bryan LGH Trauma Champion, Nebraska Medical Association’s Young Physician of the Year, Nebraska Medicine’s Young Physician of the Year, and EMS Physician Medical Director of the Year, amongst many additional awards.

He currently serves as a UNMC medical student preceptor and is an active leader for the annual Rural Health Care Leadership Conference. Buhlke currently serves on the Central City Public Schools Board of Education as vice-president-elect and is the president-elect of the Central City Economic Development Corporation. He is a dedicated volunteer for a several additional organizations in Central City.

Buhlke is a Kearney native and Kearney High School graduate. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with an environmental health emphasis from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1993. He resides in Central City, Nebraska.

Tim Carman (1984)

Tim Carman is a James Beard Award-winning food writer and columnist for The Washington Post. Carman focuses on national food issues and is a critic covering affordable and under-the-radar restaurants in the Washington D.C. area.

Carman’s journalism career started with the Kansas City Star before moving on to the Houston Post, the Houston Grand Opera, Sidewalk.com, the Houston Press, and the Humane Society of the United States. Before joining The Post in 2010, he served as food editor and columnist for the Washington City Paper.

His work has appeared in numerous editions of the “Best Food Writing” collection. He has also written for Imbibe magazine, American Scholar, Food Network magazine and other publications.

His unique approach to reporting has earned him several awards in addition to the James Beard Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals and the Society of Features Journalism. Carman is a member of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild. He is a contributor to various UNK student experiences. 

The Omaha Burke High School graduate earned his degree in advertising and journalism from Kearney State College in 1984. Carman also holds a certificate in culinary fundaments, L’Academie de Cuisine. Carman lives in Hyattsville, Maryland.

Tim Schlattmann (1985)

Tim Schlattmann resides in Los Angeles, California, and his career spans television comedy, drama, animation and film.

Notable writing credits include “Roseanne,” “Smallville,” “Dexter,” “Under the Dome” and “Insatiable.” Schlattmann has also served as co-executive or executive producer on multiple projects in collaboration with J.J. Abrahms, Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, M. Night Shyamalan, Eva Longoria and Pierce Brosnan.

 Schlattmann’s work has earned multiple nominations from the Primetime Emmys for best dramatic series (writer/producer), the Writers Guild of American for individual achievement in writing, the Golden Globes for best television drama (writer/producer) and best writing in a dramatic series by Online Film and Television. Schlattmann received the Peabody Award in 2007.

He is a longtime member of the Writers Guild of America and the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences. Schlattmann is a frequent guest speaker for UNK communication students and has been a regular guest of the Nebraska Coast Connection, a social and business networking association of former Nebraska residents now residing in southern California and working in the entertainment industry.  

Schlattmann is a Kearney native and Kearney High School graduate. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in broadcasting from Kearney State College in 1985. He also holds a master’s degree in speech communication from Colorado State University.

Jim Rundstrom Distinguished Alumni Service Award

Ryan Tworek (1998)

Ryan Tworek of Mission Viejo, California, has been a long-time volunteer for the UNK Alumni Association.

Tworek’s passion to give back stems from his UNK undergraduate campus involvement. Those experiences positioned him to be a leader among UNK alumni living in southern California for most of the years since his graduation, including service as a board member and president of the former UNK Southern California Alumni Association.

In recent years, the Tworek family hosted many alumni functions in their home. He has also continued to play an active role within the UNK Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity alumni community.

Tworek is an enterprise account executive for MasterControl, providing quality management solutions. He previously worked as an enterprise account executive for Pluralsight, Veeva and Oracle. Tworek was also an active volunteer for many years with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization in southern California.

Tworek, an Omaha native and Westside High School graduate, earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a business administration major and marketing minor from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1998. He also has his Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. 

Distinguished Young Alumnus Award

Dusty L. Birge (2011)

Dusty Birge of Kearney, Nebraska, started his career at General Electric, completing the Commercial Leadership Program, specializing in the industrial segment of the electrical industry. He then began his entrepreneurial journey, starting three successful businesses in the past seven years.

Most recently, Birge founded a startup in Kearney called Fast Forward and leads the organization as the chief executive officer. Fast Forward uses vehicle cameras and computer vision to automate the inspection and line patrol of utility powerlines. His prior startup businesses include UAV Recon and Big Hit Industries, both of which he successfully sold and exited.

He has received numerous awards for his entrepreneurial efforts and was recognized as the 2022 UNK Emerging Entrepreneur. Other recent awards and recognitions include second place at DistribuTECH (2023), a top five finish at the International SXSW Pitch contest (2023), third place at the UNK Center for Rural Development Big Idea contest (2021) and was a 2022-2023 Nebraska Department of Economic Development grant recipient.

Birge is a Dundy County High School graduate and Benkelman native. He earned an industrial distribution degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2011.

Our electronic newsletter, delivers news and event information to more than 35,000 subscribers. The newsletter includes alumni feature stories, photo galleries, Loper athletic highlights and event information. It also includes links to various campus-affiliated websites and stories from UNK and Kearney news sources.
